DE DESEJO
A place for the constellational vocation of the curators’ thought process that resists the limitations of didactic or programmatic frameworks, the catalogue of the 30th Bienal de São Paulo does not contain texts describing the works on display, but rather features reflections about the creative processes behind the works to be presented – much of which is entirely new and was produced especially for the publication. For the first time, the catalogue also brings contributions from the 111 artists, who have themselves (or their representatives, in the case of deceased artists) elaborated emblematic images, in the form of visual or conceptual constellations, of their own works. Each of these double pages is, then, another work of art: a visible presence able to exist beyond the works present in the exhibition – beyond the 30th Bienal.
With a graphic layout that was itself conceived in a constellate manner, the catalogue features 60 different dust jackets, cut from two series of the 30 posters produced by the designers and curators participating at the workshop for creation of the visual identity for The Imminence of Poetics. The piece also includes texts written by Luis Pérez-Oramas, the general curator of the Bienal, by associate curators André Severo and Tobi Maier, as well as an exclusive essay by critic and theorist Homi K. Bhabha. It is completed by texts and visual documentation on the work process of the 30th Bienal’s exhibition design, educational and visual identity projects.
